Democrat for Mayor Michele Madigan’s Statement on
Saratoga Springs Republican Party’s Lies and Dirty Politics

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – As the Democratic candidate for Mayor I made it clear from the start that I would run a positive campaign focused on the issues and Mayor Safford echoed that commitment.

Politics can be tough, particularly in today’s national climate that has unfortunately seeped into our local elections. As a woman in public service, I know firsthand how attacks can be amplified. I would not be running if I did not care deeply about this city or truly believe I am the right person to lead Saratoga Springs into the future.

Republican voters in our city know my record. Even John Safford has called me a friend, and not long ago, the Republican Party and several of its leaders supported me in my past elections.  Now, unfortunately, the current Saratoga Springs Republican Committee and Chair (Mike Brandi) has decided to run on negativity instead of issues. They have reached a new low with their recent campaign of misinformation, choosing to spread unsubstantiated claims.

Let’s be clear: every accusation in their statements is completely false. There were no backroom deals, no stifling of FOIL requests, no small businesses ruined, and certainly no pasta tossed on a car. The GOP committee has even gone so far as to label me a vandal—without a shred of proof as if it was simply made up on the spot.

These falsehoods do not define me, but they do degrade our local political discourse and border on defamation. Saratoga Springs deserves leadership that builds bridges, not leaders who thrive on division. I pledge to be a mayor who unites our community, stands up for our residents, and, most importantly, gets things done.

As your County Supervisor, I have a proven track record of leadership and dedication to Saratoga Springs. Elected six times—five as Commissioner of Finance and once as County Supervisor—I have secured millions in funding for public safety, economic development, and open space. Throughout my tenure, I have kept taxes stable and worked tirelessly to establish a permanent location for the Cold Blue program, which aids our most vulnerable residents.

While Mayor John Safford and I have agreed to run a positive campaign, those running his campaign do not seem to respect that commitment. This stark contrast highlights the kind of politics the current GOP leadership supports.

I urge Mayor Safford to promote civility in this campaign so we can focus on the important issues at hand. Let’s give Saratogians the positive campaign we promised them and that they deserve.

I am excited to share my vision for the future of our city, one with robust affordable housing, with initiatives that align with taxpayer resources to save our city money while ensuring we remain a forward-thinking and innovative community, and one with the creation of good jobs that allow residents to live, work, and thrive right here in our great city in the country, Saratoga Springs.
